HISTORY — Bayer Leverkusen break Bayern Munich’s 11-year Bundesliga title-reign

This is history, ladies and gentlemen.

Bayer Leverkusen put the cherry-on-top to their momentarily-undefeated season and claimed the crown of the Bundesliga after defeating Werder Bremen 5-0 at home on Sunday.

The club managed by Spain legend Xabi Alonso became the first team other than Bayern Munich to win the German Bundesliga since Borussia Dortmund in the 2010-11 campaign, breaking the club’s 11-year reign as champions.

This is Leverkusen’s first-ever Bundesliga league title and their first trophy (of three total) since 1993.

Xabi Alonso, who is having his first-ever managerial season at Leverkusen, also achieved his first piece of silverware.

The historic league-conquest made by Leverkusen at the BayArena began in the 25th minute when a penalty awarded to the home side, capitalized by goalscorer Victor Boniface, put the eventual champions ahead. The party was just getting started.

In the 60th minute and to practically seal the win, Granit Xhaka received the ball in front of the half-circle and hit an absolute screamer from 25 yards to double Leverkusen’s lead.

Eight minutes later, German starboy Florian Wirtz did not miss out on the goal scoring celebrations and scored an amazing goal to make it three for the home side.

With seven minutes left in the game, a counter attack sent over to Wirtz left the young winger front of goal, doubling his tally of the night after a cool finish.

The party was not stopping and just seconds before the final whistle, Wirtz completed his hat-trick, sending all mayhem lose with fans invading the pitch in celebration of the win.

A win worthy of their amazing season.

This historic Bundesliga title for Leverkusen comes with five games left to spare in the league, surpassing Bayern Munich at the top of the table with 16 points in advantage.

Leverkusen remain completely undefeated across all competitions this season and could continue their fairy-tale campaign in the Europa League (2-0 win against West Ham in quarterfinals) and the DFB Pokal Final, having the chance to complete the treble.
